Mission
Statement:
Convince the Global Olympics
Sponsors
to influence the
Communist Party of China to stop the violent crackdown on Tibetan
protesters
and open Tibet to international journalists and human rights/aide
workers.
Who
are the Global Olympic Sponsors?
The Global Olympic Sponsors are
American and International
corporations that directly fund the production of the Olympic Games via
the
TOPS program, a marketing program run by the International Olympic
Committee.
American TOP partners include: McDonalds,
Coca-Cola, General Electric,
and
Kodak. These companies have given $10’s or even
$100’s of millions to the
Beijing Olympic Organization Committee (BOCOG) in return for
advertising rights
during the games and for the right to use the official Olympic images
to
advertise
in standard markets.
Why
should we politicize the Olympic Games?
The
2008 Beijing Olympic Games are NOT a government-neutral event.
The Beijing Olympic Organization Committee (BOCOG) is NOT an
independent
organization of business people, sports enthusiasts, and marketing
professionals. BOCOG is a de-facto subcommittee of the Communist Party
of
China, the ruling and only party of the Chinese government. Liu Qi is
the
chairman and president of BOCOG and he is also an active member of the
CPC
Politburo. In other words, Liu Qi is one of the 22 most powerful men in
China,
subservient only to the Politburo’s Standing Committee and
Chinese President Hu
Jintao himself.
The
CPC is using the
Olympics as a “coming-out party”, as a
celebration of the Chinese people and, by proxy, the Chinese
government. The
Olympics will be watched by a projected 4 Billion viewers and will
attract
$100’s of Billions of increased business for the Chinese
business and, again by
proxy, the Communist Party of China.
Make
no mistake; the CPC is using the Beijing Olympics as
their stage to emerge as a World Power.
So
What’s the Problem?
The
American companies of the TOP program are directly
funding the CPC effort to gain legitimacy around the globe. While the
CPC is
attempting to market itself as a modern, 1st
World government, they
are simultaneously stomping out the lives of Tibetan peace protesters.
It has
been reported by every major news outlet that, over the last week,
hundreds or
even thousands of armed Chinese troops and police have entered Tibet
and
surrounding provinces. In an attempt to silence the voice of Tibetan
protesters, the Chinese have cut phone and Internet lines, destroyed
Tibetan
Internet cafes, blocked the entire nation from viewing YouTube, and
blocked
access to both journalists and human rights observers.
These are the actions of a 3rd
World,
totalitarian government that values control over freedom. Yet, while
these
abuses are occurring, the American companies of the TOP program are
providing
both financial support and international legitimacy to the CPC, by way
of
financing the Beijing Olympics.
The
2008 Olympics were awarded to Beijing in an attempt to
give voice to the Chinese people, to provide a chance to show the world
what
China is all about. The Olympics is an event that unites the world and
is a
celebration of the host country. The spotlight of the Olympics is now
shining
on China and our American companies are holding the lamp.
The
Plan:
It
is unacceptable that money provided by American consumers
is being funneled to the CPC at this time. The CPC is using the
Olympics to
influence the world, so it’s time that the world returns the
favor. If the CPC
wants to play on the world stage, they have to be held accountable for
their actions.
The
best way to do that is for the Global Olympic Sponsors
to turn off that spotlight, to pull the curtain on that stage. Yet, the
American
companies of the TOP program have already invested millions of dollars
into
the CPS. Why should they walk away from all that money, as well as the
chance
to advertise in front of 1 Billion Chinese consumers, and 3 Billion
world
consumers?
Because
it’s the right thing to do, and we, their customers,
are going to demand that they do it.
I
am pledging to boycott all products of the Global Olympic
Sponsors, starting April 15th, unless the CPC
stops the violent
crackdown in Tibet and opens Tibet to foreign journalists and human
rights/aid
workers. If the Global Olympic Sponsors cannot convince the CPC to do
so, then
by April 15th, they must publicly withdraw their
support of the
Beijing games.
I
urge you to make the same pledge.
